The 11 Incoterms® rules, in practical language.

Use the exact Incoterms® 2020 rule and named place in the quotation or contract. The table is a buying guide; the agreed contract and local rules control the shipment.

TermWhat it usually meansGood fit / check before agreeing
EXWSeller makes the goods available at the named place; it is not required to load the collecting vehicle or clear export.Buyer arranges collection, export and onward transport. For an export order, check whether FCA is more workable; name the exact factory or warehouse.
FCASeller clears export and hands goods to the buyer’s carrier at the named place.Often workable for containerised or multimodal freight. Name the factory, forwarder warehouse or terminal precisely.
CPTSeller pays carriage to the named destination; risk transfers when the goods are handed to the first carrier.Useful when the seller arranges main carriage but the buyer handles import. Name the destination and confirm where carrier handover occurs.
CIPLike CPT, with the seller also arranging cargo insurance required by the rule; risk still transfers at carrier handover.Confirm the named destination and that the required insurance cover suits the buyer’s cargo needs.
FASFor sea or inland-waterway transport; seller places the goods alongside the vessel at the named port of shipment.Buyer arranges loading, main carriage and import. Confirm that an alongside-vessel handover matches the port operation.
FOBFor sea or inland-waterway transport; seller delivers when goods are loaded on board at the named port of shipment. For container cargo handed over before vessel loading, FCA may fit better. Agree port costs and the precise handover.
CFRFor sea or inland-waterway transport; seller pays carriage to the destination port, while risk transfers once goods are on board at shipment.Buyer handles import clearance and charges. Distinguish the destination port paid by the seller from the point where risk transfers.
CIFLike CFR, with the seller also arranging the insurance required by the rule; risk transfers when goods are on board at shipment.Confirm the named destination port and whether the required insurance cover is enough for your cargo.
DAPSeller arranges carriage to the named destination, ready for unloading; buyer handles import clearance and charges.Useful when buyer wants delivery arranged but will manage local import entry and taxes.
DPUSeller delivers and unloads at the named destination; buyer handles import clearance and charges.Confirm the destination can receive and unload the cargo, and agree any site or appointment requirements.
DDPSeller takes the broadest delivery scope to the named destination, including import clearance and duties/taxes where applicable.Confirm the seller can lawfully complete import formalities in the destination country, plus exactly which destination costs are included.

CFR, CIF, FAS and FOB are for sea or inland-waterway transport. The other seven rules — EXW, FCA, CPT, CIP, DAP, DPU and DDP — apply to any mode or combination of modes. Incoterms® do not set payment terms or transfer of ownership; record those separately in the sales contract. See ICC Incoterms® 2020 rules and ICC guidance on Incoterms® and contracts.

Plan the shipment size

Compare freight per bag with stock you can sell.

Small or urgent lots may need courier service, where minimum charges and dimensional weight can make the cost per bag high. If your sales forecast supports a larger delivery, compare compatible models in one booking or a larger combined batch; shared pickup, booking and document costs may spread across more bags.

Small or urgent lotSpeed and a smaller releaseUseful for samples or an urgent need. Check minimum charges, chargeable volume and all destination fees.
Planned, consolidated shipmentMore pieces per bookingCompare the total freight per bag with demand, cash tied up in stock, and storage costs. There is no fixed quantity break point for every route.

Each model and colour keeps its own minimum quantity. Compare quotes using the packed carton data, destination and the same delivery scope.

Already have a China forwarder?

Separate the bag price from the journey you arrange.

If your team already works with a trusted forwarder, you can ask us to quote the bags separately and check delivery to that forwarder’s nominated warehouse in China. You keep the main freight and destination arrangements with the partner you know, while the quote makes the local handover clear.

  1. 01Share the range and planned quantityList each model and colour, with the quantity you expect to sell. If demand supports it, compare a larger combined booking against the freight cost per bag; each style and colour keeps its own minimum.
  2. 02Send the warehouse instructionsGive us its full address, receiving contact and hours, plus any carton marks, booking slot or unloading rules. Your forwarder can confirm which details it needs before the goods arrive.
  3. 03Keep the quote lines distinctReview the bag price, any China delivery or warehouse handling charge, and the freight arranged by your forwarder as separate items. Ask your forwarder to list destination handling, customs brokerage, taxes and delivery in its own scope.
  4. 04Name the handover and export partyAgree the exact warehouse or other handover point, the Incoterms® 2020 rule, and who will act as exporter and arrange export clearance. Delivery to a China warehouse does not by itself define EXW or make international freight part of the bag price.

A useful first message includes the product list, quantities by colour, destination postcode, target arrival date and your forwarder’s warehouse instructions. We can then check the product quotation and the proposed handover together. Share your shipping brief with the Feima team.

Compare the route

Which transport method fits your shipment?

Destination delivery

DDP and DAP answer different importer questions.

Both can arrange transport to a named destination. The key difference is who handles import clearance and the applicable duties and taxes. Confirm the destination arrangement before choosing a rule.

DDP · Delivered Duty Paid

The seller handles import formalities.

The seller arranges import clearance and pays applicable duties and taxes, then delivers to the named point with the goods ready for unloading.

  • Confirm who will act as importer and which broker files the entry.
  • The buyer receives and unloads the goods.
  • DDP does not require the seller to buy cargo insurance; agree cover separately.

DAP · Delivered at Place

The buyer handles import clearance.

The seller arranges transport to the named point and tenders the goods ready for unloading. The buyer completes import formalities and pays applicable duties and taxes.

  • Useful when you want delivery arranged but will manage import entry.
  • Confirm the broker, duty and tax process before dispatch.
  • State any appointment, access or unloading needs for the final delivery.

Before comparing a DDP quote, check the precise delivery address, import-clearance arrangement, duty and tax scope, destination handling, last-mile appointment and cargo cover. Some destinations require the local buyer to complete import formalities; if the seller cannot do so lawfully, DAP may be more suitable. ICC’s DAP and DDP comparison explains the difference.

For a route-specific estimate, send the destination postcode, models and quantities by colour, estimated carton details, and required arrival date through our DDP enquiry page.

Customs documents vary by goods, route and market. China’s Customs service guide describes electronic declaration and supporting commercial documents; your appointed broker confirms the requirements for this shipment. China Customs service guide.

Battery transport must be checked against the current route and carrier rules before booking. IATA’s 2026 battery guidance (PDF) is a reference for the current air-transport rules; the carrier confirms acceptance for your shipment.

Estimate before booking

Carton volume and dimensional weight.

Feima’s standard export carton is 60 × 50 × 40 cm, with a cubic volume of 60 × 50 × 40 ÷ 1,000,000 = 0.12 m³. The number of bags packed in each carton depends on the selected model. Multiply by the confirmed carton count for total shipment volume.

Carton volumeL × W × H (cm) ÷ 1,000,000Result: cubic metres (m³), per carton
Carrier dimensional weightL × W × H (cm) ÷ carrier divisorCompare with gross weight; carrier confirms divisor, rounding and chargeable weight.

Divisors differ: for example, FedEx publishes a 5,000 cm³/kg divisor for some services, while DHL eCommerce Canada publishes 6,000. These are examples, not a universal rate. FedEx dimensional weight · DHL chargeable weight.

For a mixed assortment, our bag carton packing guide lists the model, carton and marking details to settle before pickup.

Prepare as the importer

Four destination checks to settle before dispatch.

Import rules depend on the destination and the exact bag. A little preparation helps the forwarder quote the right service and gives your broker the facts needed for a shipment review.

  1. 01Name the importer and broker

Confirm which company will act as importer of record and who will file the entry. Check any local registration, tax or broker-authorisation details that apply to your business.

  2. 02Review classification and landed charges

Give your broker the accurate product description, verified material composition, use and invoice value. Ask them to confirm the tariff classification, duty and import-tax treatment for your destination; there is no single rate for every bag or market.

  3. 03Check product and marking requirements

Before artwork and packing are final, confirm any destination rules for labels, country-of-origin marks, packaging or supporting product documents. Share the written brief with us so the proposed version can be checked against it.

  4. 04Make the handover and delivery point precise

Write the Incoterms® rule, version and full named place. Confirm who pays each quoted service, who handles customs, whether the destination can unload the cargo and whether an appointment, pallet or restricted delivery window is needed.

A courier may present an express parcel to customs or coordinate a broker, but customs can still request information from the recipient and assess duties, taxes or brokerage charges. For a DDP quote, ask us to confirm the available route and included charges for your postcode before the order is booked.

Details that can change the landed cost

Three checks to make before dispatch.

Agree these with your broker or forwarder while the cartons are still at the factory. Destination practices and carrier charges vary, so a written scope is more useful than a generic estimate.

01 · Invoice and customs value

Keep the shipment record accurate.

Give your broker the actual order and payment details, plus any other cost information it requests. Customs valuation methods and adjustments depend on the destination. Reconcile the product descriptions, quantities and carton data across the invoice, packing list and order documents; do not use an arbitrary lower value to reduce duty.

WTO customs valuation overview →

02 · Pallets and wood packaging

Confirm requirements before palletising.

If the shipment will use solid-wood pallets, crates or blocking, tell your forwarder and ask the destination broker which treatment, marks or other requirements apply. ISPM 15 covers many forms of wood packaging used in international trade, but each country’s implementation and exceptions should be checked for the route.

IPPC wood-packaging guidance →

03 · Arrival and free time

Ask when destination charges begin.

For container freight, ask the carrier or forwarder how free time, terminal storage, demurrage and container detention apply, including the last free day and empty-container return. For LCL, request the destination warehouse, handling and storage charges. Keep the customs contact and receiving appointment ready before arrival.

The final leg matters too

Prepare for customs release and warehouse receiving.

Import clearance and physical delivery are separate steps. Give your broker and receiving team time to coordinate both, especially when a warehouse needs an appointment or unloading equipment.

Before arrivalKeep the clearance contact readyConfirm who receives the arrival notice, who submits any requested information, which charges must be settled for release, and the carrier’s applicable storage or collection terms. Keep the commercial invoice, packing list and transport reference together.
At deliveryCheck the cartons as they arriveReserve the receiving slot and unloading equipment. Count cartons against the packing list and keep their labels. If anything is missing or visibly damaged, record it on the delivery receipt where the carrier’s process allows, take clear photos and notify your forwarder or carrier promptly under its claims process.

Storage, examination and claims procedures vary by route, carrier and contract. Ask your forwarder for the applicable deadlines and document list for this shipment.

Common questions

Questions about shipping and importing bags.

Which Incoterm is best if I use my own China forwarder?

It depends on who collects the goods and who clears them for export. We can quote the bags and delivery to your named China warehouse as separate lines. The quotation should state the exact handover place and export-clearance responsibility; delivery to a warehouse is not automatically EXW.

What is the difference between EXW, FCA, FOB and DDP?

EXW makes the goods available at the named seller’s premises; the buyer arranges collection and export formalities. Under FCA, the seller clears export and hands goods to the buyer’s carrier at the named place. FOB applies to sea or inland-waterway delivery when goods are loaded on board the vessel. DDP places the broadest delivery and import-clearance responsibility on the seller, including import duties and taxes where applicable. Name the place or port and confirm the full scope in the sales contract.

Do Incoterms also set payment terms or ownership?

No. Incoterms allocate agreed delivery responsibilities, transport costs and risks, and some rules include a seller insurance obligation. They do not set the goods price, payment schedule or when ownership transfers. Record those separately in the sales contract, alongside the bag specification and delivery dates. Write the exact rule, named place and version—for example, FCA with the full China warehouse address, Incoterms® 2020.

How do courier, air freight, LCL and FCL compare?

Courier is simple for samples and small urgent parcels, but often has a higher cost per bag. Air freight can suit larger time-sensitive shipments. LCL shares sea-container space and may fit smaller non-urgent cargo, with consolidation and destination handling to consider. FCL reserves a container and can suit a larger combined order. Compare total door-to-door charges, service scope and timing for your destination.

Why can a small order have such a high freight cost per piece?

A small shipment still incurs pickup, handling, documentation and minimum transport charges. Courier may also charge by dimensional weight. Adding quantities or combining models in one shipment can spread some shared costs across more bags, although every style and colour keeps its own minimum and packing footprint.

Can you deliver at factory price to my forwarder’s China warehouse?

We can quote the bag price separately and check a domestic delivery charge to the warehouse you nominate. Please send its full address, receiving contact, hours, carton-label rules and appointment requirements. We will also confirm handling charges, export declaration responsibility and the named handover term before production is booked.

How is carton volume or dimensional weight calculated?

Carton volume in cubic metres is length × width × height in centimetres ÷ 1,000,000. A carrier estimates dimensional weight by dividing the carton volume in cubic centimetres by the divisor for the quoted service, then compares it with actual gross weight. Divisors, rounding and shipment rules vary, so confirm the current method with your carrier. For 60 × 50 × 40 cm, volume is 0.12 m³ per carton.

What carton information should I request before choosing a route?

Feima’s standard export carton is 60 × 50 × 40 cm; the number of bags packed in each carton depends on the selected model. Ask for the confirmed carton count, actual outer dimensions, gross weight, total cubic metres and any pallet dimensions. The carrier or forwarder confirms final measured weight and charges.

Can bags containing a battery travel by air or courier?

Possibly, but acceptance depends on the battery chemistry, watt-hours, whether it is installed or packed separately, packaging, quantity, route and current carrier rules. Tell your forwarder if the bag includes a light, tracker, heated element or bundled power bank. Lithium and sodium-ion batteries can fall under dangerous-goods rules for air cargo, and any reduced requirements depend on the applicable packing instruction and shipment details. Share the battery information and the applicable UN 38.3 test summary with the forwarder before booking. IATA’s 2026 guidance is a reference; the carrier confirms classification, route, packing and documents for the actual shipment.

What happens during China export customs clearance?

The exporter or its appointed customs broker prepares an electronic declaration and shipment documents. The exact paperwork can include a commercial invoice, packing list, transport details and any applicable licence or supporting document. The exporter of record and declaration arrangement should be agreed for the chosen Incoterm and shipment.

How can I help avoid import-clearance delays?

Share your destination broker’s document and product-detail request with your Feima contact before dispatch. We can coordinate the confirmed factory-side product and packing information with the shipment file. Your importer or broker submits the local entry and answers customs requests; release timing remains subject to the authority and route.

Who handles import customs and duties at destination?

Under terms such as EXW, FCA, FOB and DAP, the buyer arranges destination import clearance and applicable duties and taxes, commonly through its customs broker. Under DDP, the seller handles those import responsibilities. Agree the named delivery point and confirm who can lawfully make the local entry before choosing the term; your Feima contact can coordinate the factory-side product and packing information for that arrangement.

Under DDP, who unloads the shipment and arranges cargo insurance?

Under Incoterms® 2020 DDP, the seller handles import clearance and applicable duties and taxes, then delivers at the named point ready for unloading. The buyer receives and unloads the goods. DDP does not require the seller to buy cargo insurance, so ask whether cover is included or quoted separately.

Can we use DDP if the seller cannot clear imports in my country?

DDP places import formalities on the seller, but local rules may require the buyer or another local entity to make the entry. Confirm this with your destination broker before agreeing the term. If the seller cannot complete import clearance, DAP may fit: the seller arranges delivery and the buyer clears imports and pays applicable duties and taxes.

Does an express courier handle import clearance?

The courier commonly presents express shipments to customs or coordinates a broker, but this does not make the shipment duty-free. Customs may request information from the recipient, and assessed duties, taxes or brokerage charges depend on the destination and payment terms. Confirm whether charges are billed to sender, recipient or a third party before dispatch.

Does a freight quote include every charge at destination?

Not automatically. Ask the forwarder to list the quoted service scope and identify pickup, export handling, main transport, destination terminal or warehouse handling, customs brokerage, duties and taxes, last-mile delivery, and any appointment or storage charges. Compare offers to the same named delivery point and ask which items are estimates or billed separately.

Is cargo insurance included in the freight rate?

Ask the carrier or forwarder to state whether cargo cover is included or quoted separately. Confirm the insured amount, covered route, exclusions, deductible, claim deadline and documents required. Keep any premium and the party arranging cover visible in the shipment quote.

Who confirms the HS code and import duty for my bags?

The importer or its customs broker should confirm the classification and local duty treatment for the destination market. Share an accurate product description, construction, verified material composition, intended use and commercial documents; similar-looking bags can classify differently. Duty, tax and any preference depend on the confirmed code, origin and destination rules, so we do not apply one universal rate.

What should I confirm as importer before the bags are made?

Ask your destination broker who will be importer of record, which product details they need to review the tariff code and charges, and whether local labels or supporting documents apply. Share the selected bag’s verified material and artwork brief with your contact before the sample and packing are approved. Confirm the named Incoterm and delivery point in the order documents.

Which shipping documents should I prepare?

A commercial invoice, packing list and transport document are commonly part of the shipment file, alongside the applicable export declaration. A certificate of origin, permit or additional supporting record may be needed for a particular destination, product, tariff preference or buyer programme. Your forwarder or customs broker should confirm the exact list, document owner and timing for the route before dispatch.

How should I agree the customs value on the commercial invoice?

Give your destination broker the actual order and payment details and the other cost information it requests; the applicable valuation method and adjustments depend on the importing country. Keep the invoice, packing list and order documents consistent with the shipment, and do not use an arbitrary lower value to reduce duty. The WTO overview explains the commercial basis of customs valuation; your broker confirms the local declaration for your order.

Do wooden pallets need treatment or special marks for import?

Solid-wood pallets, crates and blocking can fall within international wood-packaging controls such as ISPM 15. Tell your forwarder if the cargo will be palletised, then ask the destination broker which treatment, mark and local requirements apply. Country implementation and exceptions vary; confirm them before the packing plan is final.

What are demurrage, detention and free-time charges?

For full-container freight, demurrage commonly applies while the full container stays in the destination terminal beyond free time; detention commonly applies while the equipment is outside the terminal before the empty container is returned. Ask when free time starts, the last free day, the applicable terminal and container rates, and the return depot. For LCL, request destination warehouse, handling and storage charges. Definitions, clocks and tariffs depend on the carrier, route and contract.

When should I confirm the freight quote and delivery estimate?

You can compare routes early using your destination, target date and estimated carton data. Before booking, update the quote with the final carton count, dimensions, gross weight, named handover point and required destination service. Ask for the quote’s validity, included and excluded charges, and route-specific transit estimate in writing. Production time and freight transit are separate stages; the forwarder should refresh its estimate when the route or booking date changes.

What should I send for a logistics quote?

Send the destination postcode, product models and quantities by colour, target dispatch or arrival date, carton count and dimensions if available, gross weight, and whether your own forwarder will collect in China. Mention batteries, special labels, pallets or delivery appointments early. We can then compare a factory/China-warehouse handover with the transport service you need.

What should I do if customs asks for more information?

Ask the broker or courier which specific document or product detail is needed, who must submit it and by when. Send the factory-side request and order reference to your salesperson so we can help coordinate the confirmed product and packing information. Your broker manages the local response; customs and the carrier determine release and any storage handling.

What should my warehouse record when cartons arrive?

Count cartons against the packing list and retain the carton labels. For a missing or visibly damaged carton, record the exception through the carrier’s receiving process, take clear photos and notify the carrier or forwarder promptly within its claims process. If the issue concerns the bags or packing, send your Feima contact the order, model and carton references so we can review the facts and next steps together under the order terms.

Can you help plan the bags and shipping together before I choose the quantity?

Yes. Send your proposed models, quantities, destination and required arrival date. Your contact brings the available stock or production plan together with packing and route options. If you have a China forwarder, we can quote factory pricing and delivery to its warehouse separately. This helps you compare the order as a whole before committing.
